Songs in the key of life

My wife has written up her effort to create a 120-song playlist to celebrate her pending birthday.  Why 120 songs?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I decided to create a 120-song playlist for my iPod Shuffle to celebrate my upcoming 40th birthday. I wanted to include favorite songs and artists from throughout my life. After doing some fun "research" to help trigger memories (rifling through my LPs, reviewing my database of all the bands I've covered for publication, studying the track listings on Rhino's 1970s and new wave series), I came up with about 130 artists, sometimes with specific albums and songs in mind, which I then winnowed down to 120. The hardest part was choosing a single song by some artists.

Along with providing the list of all the songs, she gives her criteria for selecting artists, even justifying those cheesy songs from the 70's.  There's a lot of good stuff on her list.  One of the reasons we hit it off so well is that when we first met, we realized that we had been attending many of the same concerts in Philadelphia.  Our music collection could be considered fairly large.

What 120 songs would you put on your iPod Shuffle?
