Richard Flanagan discussed the process he uses to help companies get great value out of their training and development work, as described in the book, Six Disciplines of Breakthrough Learning.
I attended the Chicagoland Learning Leaders Conference (CLLC) today. Here is a smattering of quotes and thoughts I had.
The 2005 version of the Chicagoland Learning Leaders Conference will be on 21 November 2005 at McDonald's Hamburger University. Think about attending, if you are in the area.
Kevin Cookman, representing The Chalfont Project, spoke on The Human Element of Change from Traditional to e-Learning. This was ostensibly a case study, but Cookman had such fun discussing the psychology behind change programs that he did not have much opportunity to describe the case study. The topic applies to any change program, and it was interesting to hear Cookman's perspective and how he has worked with Chalfont clients.
The focus of the talk is how Powell and Guest have brought together the worlds of knowledge management and learning in their organization. They see very strong connections within these worlds, and decided that working together makes much more sense than working apart.
Rich Teerlink spoke on People Driven Execution, based on his new book. If you ever get the chance to hear Teerlink speak, go do it, even if you aren't particularly interested in motorcycles. He has an off-beat style, and he tells a great story about how Harley-Davidson went from being a laughingstock in the early 1980's to the high performing "lifestyle company" that it is today.
Vince Serritella, CLO of Chicago-based W.W. Grainger, spoke about Finding the "Seam" in Effective Governance of the Learning Organization. The "seam" is that magical place in life where everything seems to come together. Serritella used the analogy of the perfect play in football, which he coaches, to highlight the idea. In football, that play may only happen once a game.
Dirk Tussing, John Nawn and the Executive Learning Exchange did an excellent job of bringing together people and speakers from all over the Chicagoland area. This is an index to my impressions of the conference.
Session report for CLLC - "Improving Collaboration Using AI-based Tools:" Bringing in Outside Knowledge, Improving Internal & External Search, Improving Collaboration.
Kevin Cookman of The Chalfont Project talked about ROI from a different perspective than we usually hear. A lot of what The Chalfont Project does is taking the principles of psychology - human behavior - and building methodologies around them to help organizations with behavior and change.
Bank One needs to train office staff and bank tellers at bank branches all over the country while at the same time dealing with a down economy and big cutbacks in travel and training. As with Rockwell Collins and Grant Thornton, they had to battle entrenched ideas about the nature of "training," which was off site, classroom-based education.
The bulk of Leandro Herrero's talk at CLLC focused on the paradox of the Designed vs. the Emergent organization. All enterprises have both, and the claim is that to continue learning and innovating enterprises MUST create space for the emergent activities without trying to control them.
Bob Dean described the development of "Grant Thornton University" in the past few years of growth at the company and significant change in the economy.
The opening talk of the CLLC focused on how Cliff Purington built the learning approach for Rockwell Collins from a heavily classroom-based environment at the Cedar Rapids headquarters to an environment where people are able to access learning materials online through a variety of media from offices around the world.
The 2nd Chicagoland Learning Leaders Conference was a great success, from the quality of the speakers to the size of the crowd packed into Bank One's meeting rooms to the networking opportunities to the vendors present.
